A commemorative coin made of nickel silver, made with the usual level of quality of coinage, is dedicated to the only species of rodents of the dormouse family in the fauna of Ukraine, which are occasionally found in the coniferous-deciduous forests of the plains, mountains and in the gardens of woodland and forest-steppe (Rivne, Kiev and Cherkasy regions). The garden dormouse is active at dusk and at night. During the winter it hibernates until April. It makes nests mainly in hollows and among roots. It feeds on tree seeds, fruits, mollusks, insects, eggs and chicks, and small rodents. From 1900 to 1980, only 8 individuals were found on the territory of Ukraine. Listed in the Red Book of Ukraine in 1980.

The obverse of the coin on the left and right is framed by the branches of a wreath formed by a stylized image of individual species of flora and fauna. In the upper space between the branches of the ornament, there is an image of the small State Emblem of Ukraine. The reverse of the coin is filled with an image of a garden dormouse sitting on a raspberry branch. At the top along the perimeter of the coin there is an inscription in a semicircle - “SONYA SADOVAYA” (SONYA SADOVA), along the lower perimeter in a semicircle there is an inscription in Latin - “ELIOMYS QUERCINUS”.
